Chinese Precinct Development Takes Big Leap Forward
The Greater Bendigo City Council has appointed consultants to undertake the urban design, architecture and engineering component of the $4.4 million Bendigo Chinese Precinct development.Council has awarded a $375,000 contract to Rush Wright Architects in association with McGauran Giannini Soon Architects, Cardno Grogans Richards consulting engineers, Osborne Consulting Group engineers and Electrolight lighting designers. more » |

1774 - Captain James Cook sighted and named Norfolk Island in honour of the Duke of Norfolk. In 1788 Lieutenant King took a party of 23 to the island and at two periods, it became a location to which convicts who commited crimes in N.S.W. were sent. 1843 - The South Australian Legislative Council met for the first time, and consisted of seven nominees. 1844 - Sturt reached the site of Menindee on the Darling River. 1847 - Geelong was on this day incorporated as a town. 1849 - Construction on N.S.W.'s first railway line began. The line linking Goulbourne with Sydney, was privately owned at first, then was taken over by the government in 1855 after encountering major financial difficulties. 1865 - Townsville was today gazetted a Port of Entry to Australia. 1874 - The Governor of New South Wales, Sir Hercules Robinson, acting on behalf of Britain, formally accepted the sovereignty of the Fiji Islands. He temporarily became the Governor of Fiji. 1923 - Brisbane and Sydney were linked by trunk telephone for the first time. 1942 - The troop carrier, P&O's Orcades, was torpedoed on her way to the U.K. from Capetown. Thirty - Eight men died in 2 attacks on the ship. more on today » |
