Having satisfied himself of the identity of the new arrivals Phillip decided to delay disembarkation no longer. He therefore left Captain Hunter on the Sirius to welcome the French, while he himself set out on the afternoon of 25 January for Sydney Cove.
The Sirius remained until the morning of the 20th when the French ships entered the bay. Then, compliments having been exchanged, the Sirius also made sail tor Port Jackson and at sunset on 26 January 1788 the whole fleet was safely anchored in Sydney Cove.
"In the evening when all the ships laid anchor, the English colours were displayed; and, at the foot of the flagstaff, His Majesty's health and success to the settlement were drunk by the Governor, many of the principal officers, and private men who were present upon the occasion."
