Watkin Tench sailed with the first fleet on board the Charlotte where he served as a Capt/Lt in the marines. He wrote two books of his adventures in the colony.
The first, A Narrative of the Expedition to Botany Bay, gives us a first hand account of the voyage and is a fantastic eye-witness account by an extremely talented writer.
