Entertainment 1885 - Helen Armstrong performed in front of a packed house in Melbourne's Concert Hall. A few weeks later she left for the U.K. and stardom as Nellie Melba. 1923 - The Soccer Association of Australia was formed. It was originally known as the Football Association. It brought together state clubs for the first time. The first soccer club had been founded at Parramatta N.S.W. in 1880. 1963 - The Royal Hobart Golf Club officially opened. The first club in Tasmania had been formed in Hobart in 1896. 1982 - The Australian National Gallery was officially opened in Canberra.
Famous Deaths
1973 - Nineteen year old Bronwyn Richardson's body was found floating in the Murray River near Albury. Her murder still remains unsolved. 1988 - Two young police constables were ambushed and shot dead from close range in Walsh Street, South Yarra, Melb. 1991 - Sheila Florance - Actress - Mostly known for her role as Lizzie on the series "Prisoner". |

National Events 1606 - Spanish voyager Luis Vaez de Torres sailed into the watery space between New Guinea and Cape York and named it Torres Strait in his own honour. Neither of which had been discovered by Europeans. 1838 - The first Lutherans came to shore in S.A. They had fled their native Prussia because of Religious Repression. Led by Augustus Kavel, they held their first service on October 25th in Adelaide, S.A. 1906 - Sir Isaac Issacs appointed to the High Court where he was to remain for 24 years - 1930. When he then assumed office as Australia's first native - born Governor - General. 1929 - In an election for the House of Representatives Labor won a sweeping victory and ten days later J.H. Scullen became Australia's 13th P.M. However unlike his predecessors, he chose not to live at the Lodge, which remained vacant until 1932. 1953 - The first issue of Sydney's Sun - Herald hits the news stands. 1985 - Canon, Arthur Malcolm became the first Aboriginal bishop in Australia.
