Entertainment 1924 - Radio station 3LO began broadcasting and featured "Dame Nellie Melba", givng her first, "Australian Farewell Performance" in "La Boheme" at His Majesty's Theatre. Ironically, this was the year in which the Walter Burley Griffen designed Capitol Theatre, a cinema was to be opened also. 1984 - John Lowe, achieved the "First Televised 501 Score" throwing darts at a dart board, this magnificent feat was accomplished using only nine darts.
Famous Deaths
1911 - Harry Rickards - Theatre Owner - Founder of the Tivoli Theatre Chain. In 1871 with a partner, he took a company of performers to Melbourne where he gained instant success. They purchased the Garrick Theatre in 1890, then in 1893 changed its name to the Tivoli. 1954 - A gas leak at the Collinsville Coal Mine Qld. claimed the lives of 7 men. 1973 - The "Blythe Star" was wrecked on the rocks off the "South West Cape of Tasmania". The vessel sank with the loss of three crew members from the 320 ton Coastal Freighter. |

National Events 1823 - Francis Forbes was appointed Chief Justice of the new Supreme Court of N.S.W. which opened May 1824, then went on to receive a knighthood in 1837. 1893 - The West Australian Government passed the "Homestead Act" which then provided for free selection of 65 - Hectare Homestead Farms. 1933 - Australia's first traffic control lights were switched on in Sydney. 1936 - Aviatrix, Jean Batten touched down at Mascott Airport Sydney, Australia en route to Auckland, New Zealand. She became the first woman to fly from the United Kingdom to New Zealand, completing the journey in 11 days and 45 minutes. 1945 - The first day of what was to be a four day conference of "Non - Labor" Political organisations set up by Sir Robert Menzies. With the new "Liberal Party" being formed and then formally constituted in December, the Liberal policies were outlined in August 1946. 1981 - A 12 year old boy attempted to "HOLD UP" The C.B. Bank at Blaxland in the Blue Mountains.

His work includes the drawings for "Storm Boy", as well as in 1986, he teamed up with writer Michael Page and published the fantasy book "Out Of This World". He is also known for his design of the "Flag of the Northern Territory". |
