Greater Bendigo Citizens Of The Year
Well known local sporting identity Estelle Waterman and 16 year old young achiever Nicholas Kimberley have been named the 2009 City of Greater Bendigo Citizen and Young Citizen of the Year.For the past 56 years Estelle Waterman has taught and promoted the sports of swimming and netball to generations of Bendigonians. In 1960 she founded the very successful Golden City Netball Association and Falcons Netball Club and in her 46 years as a voluntary swimming coach has taught thousands of young people water confidence, safety and the skill of swimming.Young Citizen of the Year Nicholas Kimberley is a dedicated young man with a passion for the environment, social justice issues and contributing to and making a difference in his community.He has already committed himself to many causes and initiatives centred around the environment and helping others. As a Flora Hill secondary college student he helped organise a range of different events for students and hosted a monthly radio show on Vision Australia.Nicholas is one of two rural representatives on the Youth Affairs Council Reference Group - the peak body for youth affairs in Victoria and locally he is a member of the City of Greater Bendigo’s Express youth committee.In addition he has also created, sourced funding and a location for the Bendigo Amateur Drama group, coaches an under 12’s basketball team and is currently working to establish a youth link with Bendigo’s Sister Cities. |
