Lives put at risk by corrupt police who leak information
LIVES are being put at risk by "festering" cells of corrupt police leaking information on confidential investigations to criminals, Victoria's police corruption watchdog has warned.Officers in the corrupt cells are "culturally influential" in the force and can exploit the common practice of police sharing inside information on investigations to big-note themselves to their mates.Information traded by corrupt police to criminal associates damaged investigations, and "in extreme cases lives can be, and have been, put in jeopardy", the Office of Police Integrity warned. more »

1852 - The University of Sydney was founded on this day. Courses began in 1853 and women were granted admission and equal rights in 1884. This was Australia's first university. 1877 - In order to break up large land holdings, a land tax was introduced based on acreage and value. 1906 - Electric trams were brought into service along a 12km line between Essendon and Melbourne. The first cable trams appeared in 1885, with the first electric tramway being opened in 1889. 1935 - An Industrial Monopoly was created when B.H.P. and Australian Iron and Steel amalgamated. 1954 - T.A.A.'s first Viscount passenger aircraft touched down for the first time on Australian soil at Darwin. The first of 6 such aircraft ordered by the airline, it refuelled and took off for Sydney and Melb. 1971 - The opening of the first 3 - mile section of the F4 freeway, West of Sydney. It wasn't until 1974 that the road was extended to Prospect at a cost of $22m. 1978 - Travel consultant Warren Fellows, Bar Owner William Sinclair, and the Sydney - Newton Rugby League player Paul Hayward were arrested at Bangkok Airport on charges of possessing heroin. All 3 were sentenced to death, which was later commuted to prison sentences. more on today » |
