Local gardeners are faced with hot dry summers and mild winters with a number of frosts but little chance of snow. Rainfall is unpredictable, but averages around 550mm.
Bendigo is 225 metres above sea level and is on Latitude:-36.7533 South; Longitude: 144.2825 East giving a temperate to semi-arid climate. Roughly equivalent latitudes are: North island New Zealand, southern Argentina, central Japan, south Korea, San Fransisco, southern Utah, Colorardo, Kansas, Moussouri, Kentucky, Virginia, central Turkey, Athens & Greece, southern Italy, and southern Spain so plants from these areas are likely to survive in the Greater Bendigo region although the micro-climates of each garden needs to be taken into account.
Bendigo experiences average annual temperature maximums of 20.4C, with a mean of about 28C during summer and 13C in winter. Bendigo averages 103 rain days per year. The first frost generally falls late April, with the last mid to late October.
