Waterwise Gardens |
With water restrictions in Bendigo currently preventing the use of mains water outside it's time to get waterwise. With the heat of summer already starting to hit it's important to get the water you can use where you want it and keep it there.
When possible group plants with similar water needs together.
Create wind breaks against hot north winds.
Weed so plants aren't competing for moisture.
Mulch. A 75mm thick mulch reduces evaporation by up to 70%, but keep clear of the base of plants to prevent colar rot.
Improve the soil with organic matter. Organic mulches will break down and feed the soil while conserving moisture. Homemade composts are a cheap organic mulch/soil conditioner.
Get the water to the roots where it's needed. Use weeper hoses, drip systems or water spikes so the water gets into the soil without being blown away or evaporating.
Water in the cool of the day, early moring or late evening. Water deeply rather than a little bit often. Pots may need to be watered every day or even twice a day in really hot weather.
Water crystals and products to counter the hydrophobic coating on soils will help get the water in and keep it there.
Grey water from the bathroom and laundry shouldn't be used on vegetables or come in direct contact with berries or fruits. Ground watering of fruit trees is safe, but rainwater should be used on other edible plants. |
