THE HISTORY OF AUSTRALIA's FEDERATION BEGINS RIGHT HERE IN BENDIGO
Dr John Quick is remembered for the proposal he put - on behalf of the Sandhurst (Bendigo) ANA - to the
Corowa ‘Peoples Convention’ in 1893. John proposed that a new Federal Convention be held, with its delegates elected by the people, The Convention would draft a Constitution, to be put to the people for approval in a referendum. John’s proposal was adopted, with elections for the convention held in 1897. In 1901 John Quick was knighted for his contribution to Federation, and also elected unopposed as Bendigo’s first Federal MP. With Sir Robert Garran he wrote The Australian Annotated Constitution of the Australian Commonwealth in 1901 which is still a recognised text-book on Australian Constitutional Law. |
