MP3 SOUND FILES
Okay, so you're after top quality sound without giving up a lot of space on your hard disk. Well, MP3 is a WAV file made smaller in size by a compression program. For those that don't know, just like the familiar cassette tape recording, WAV files are sounds, recorded by a computer, and, similar to cassette tapes, by adding a microphone or other input, they can record absolutely anything you want. With the right leads or inputs connected to your sound card, you can record talking, singing, music, CD's & more.
BENEFITS The beauty of mp3 files is that they are usually one twelfth the file size of a similar WAV file whilst still retaining almost the same quality audio as the original WAV (sometimes better if recorded correctly). The fact that most CD quality songs are around 3.5mb in mp3 format, compared to a WAV of around 40MB in size allows users to store hundreds, if not thousands of songs on their computer and up to around 250 songs can be stored on a CDROM instead of the usual 20 or so standard WAVs for click-easy playing.
DRAWBACKS One drawback of mp3 as opposed to WAV (my opinion only) is that you need an mp3 player in order to play them, which for PC's by the way, is available free all over the place, whereas a WAV file can be played in any CD player found in most homes today. But, that being said, mp3 can't be beaten, as an ideal way of storing and playing them on your home computer plus, the fact that most new home CD players on the market are now manufactured with inbuilt mp3 players as well, will, in the near future, render this drawback irrelevant.
MAKING YOUR OWN You can use a recording program to record the audio such as "Audacity", save the recorded file as a WAV file onto your PC and then convert the WAV file to Mp3. Audacity is a top quality freeware program that can be used to record anything onto your computer. Once you have saved the file, use the CDex (available free below) to compress your WAV file into an Mp3 File.
