First introduced to Victoria in 1858, Australian Rules Football (Aussie Rules) is played on a large oval-shaped pitch between two teams of 18 players each. Teams try to score goals by putting a ball through posts situated on either end of the oval. Players may handball, kick or punch the ball, but the ball may never be thrown.
Australian Football League.
The Australian Football League is one of, if not the biggest football league in Australia and commands a huge following. Australian Rules was mainly played in Victoria, with the league having just 12 teams, it was known as the VFL. The big push during the 1980's saw the game expand Australia wide and saw the league's conversion into the AFL. Today 16 teams battle it out for Australia's most coveted prize to become Grand Final winners.
